2 million ITINs set to expire in 2019. . .
Taxpayers who do not qualify for a Social Security number use an ITIN as a tax identification (ID) number for filing and administrative purposes. At the end of 2019, several ITINs, two million, in fact, are scheduled to expire. They are as follows:
- Any ITIN with middle digits 83, 84, 85, 86, or 87 will expire at the end of 2019.
- Any ITIN that was not used on a tax return in the past three years will also expire.
- ITINs with middle digits 70 through 82 that expired in 2016, 2017, or 2018 may also be renewed.
Taxpayers with expiring Individual Taxpayer Identification Numbers (ITINs) can renew their ITINs more quickly and avoid refund delays in 2020 by submitting their renewal application before the end of 2019.
Any taxpayer with an expiring ITIN should file a completed renewal application as soon as possible. All required identification and residency documents must be included in the application. If this information is incomplete or missing from an application, the IRS will delay processing the application until it receives these documents.
Almost 2 million taxpayer households are affected by expiring ITINs. Taxpayers should renew their ITIN as soon as possible based on the multitude of anticipated renewal applications. Immediately applying will help avoid processing and refund delays in 2020.
